For actor Sam Worthington, filming 220 feet above Madison Ave. is hairy experience.
The 35-year-old star of “Man on a Ledge,” in theaters on Friday, spent three weeks filming the movie on top of a Midtown Manhattan hotel all while sporting a hairstyle commonly referred to as a mullet.
“The mullet was on purpose,” he says, having long since cut his hair. “To me, the movie is like an old 80s film and this is my homage to Martin Riggs, Mel Gibson’s character in ‘Lethal Weapon.’ It is just my little touchstone so I don’t lose track of who my character is.”
Worthington’s character is Nick Cassidy, a former New York City police officer who threatens to jump off a building to protest being unjustly convicted of stealing a rather large diamond.
The actor grew his hair longer in the back than on the sides to give himself “an iconic, yet distinct New York look.”
Also referred to as “hockey hair,” the mullet rose to prominence during the 70s and 80s when it was popularized by pop culture icons such as David Bowie and MacGyver.
It is apparently still popular in Worthington’s homeland of Australia.
“They float around a lot back home,” he says. “I would never knock a mullet because I’ve had one many times in my life. It’s the way my hair naturally grows.”
Worthington will take the retro hairstyle one step further in his next movie “Wrath of the Titans,” which hits theaters at the end of March.
“It’s like I’m the Kenny Powers of Greek mythology,” he says, referring to Danny McBride’s character in the HBO series “Eastbound & Down.” “The mullet has to be more intense when you are playing Perseus.”
