Hundreds mourn singer Etta James

ETTA JAMES, the legendary rhythm and blues singer who recorded the enduring love song “At Last,” was laid to rest Saturday at a Los Angeles area church.

Hundreds of mourners attended, including Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera, both of whom performed during the service.

The Rev. Al Sharpton eulogized James, saying she should be remembered as a woman and an artist who “turned her pain into power.”

Sharpton highlighted James’ vocal talent and her ability to break down racial and cultural barriers.

He also read a statement from President Obama praising James’ “legendary voice.”

Obama and the First Lady danced to a version of “At Last” at his inauguration ball.

Aguilera performed James’ signature song, bringing the hundreds of friends, family and fans at the church to their feet. Wonder performed “Shelter in the Rain.”

James died Jan. 20 after battling leukemia and other ailments.

She won four Grammy Awards, including a lifetime achievement honor, and was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

She scored her first hit when she was just a teenager with the suggestive “Roll With Me, Henry.” The song’s title name had to be changed to “The Wallflower” in order to get airplay.

Her 1967 album, “Tell Mama,” a mix of rock and gospel, became one of the most highly regarded soul albums of all time.
